Request a shield for external review
EPA content editors may rarely need to let external reviewers see content before making it accessible to everyone. You may only request this feature for content that you intend to make public in the near future. This feature is not intended for long-term password protection.
Making files private is a separate function which you perform yourself.

How Does It Work?
- For external reviewers to see the page, it must be published. You can request that WebCMS support publish the content when we shield the page.
- The same username and password are shared among all content that need external review.
- Give the user id and password to your reviewers.
- This password will be reset periodically.
- It will be posted here and on your dashboard menu.
- To password protect a single page, provide the full and published URL of the page.
- Example: https://www.epa.gov/columbiariver/fish-contaminant-survey
- Any password protected pages will show up on your broken link report since the link checker cannot enter an ID and password, but the pages will fall off once you publish the content.
- When you're ready, send us your request using the form below. We will implement the password protection for you.
- Note that the password protected page is temporary and for external review only.
- Unpublishing or deleting the page does not automatically remove the password protection. Email WebCMS Support when you want to remove the password protection.
Making Changes during Review
Log into the WebCMS as usual and navigate to your content from the dashboard or content screen. Make your changes and publish. The content will remain password protected. You will be asked for the shield user id and password.
